Approve the Fabric Condition Before You Approve the Print File
A print buyer often focuses on the artwork file first: Pantone callout, logo size, print placement, and whether the linework is sharp enough. Those details matter. But for screen printing on blank apparel, the garment surface decides whether the ink behaves the way the file suggests.
The most common problem is not a bad logo. It is a blank that reaches the press with too much moisture, inconsistent absorbency, or a surface that was not tested against the chosen ink system. In our experience, that is when a buyer sees show-through on the inside of the garment, dull color on dark cotton, or a print that feels heavier than expected.
For a print shop ordering blank T-shirts or hoodies in bulk, the decision should be simple: do not approve production until fabric moisture, underbase logic, mesh count, and wash fastness expectations are documented. The artwork file is only one part of the approval package.
Use this when the fabric feels damp, cartons arrived from humid storage, or the inside of a trial print shows ink migration.

Control Moisture Before It Turns Into Show-Through
Fabric moisture sounds like a storage issue, but it becomes a print-quality issue. When blank garments sit in humid cartons or move from warehouse to press too quickly, the fibers can hold more moisture than the ink system expects. On cotton-rich blanks, that can make ink travel deeper into the fabric instead of sitting cleanly on the surface.
In YTTWEAR factory logic, fabric moisture above about 10% is a warning point for screen print work because print paste can penetrate toward the back side of the garment. This benchmark can vary by fabric composition, ink type, and finish, so it should be treated as a pre-production check rather than a universal law.
If moisture is not checked before printing, the buyer may approve a clean strike-off in one condition and receive bulk goods with show-through after the cartons sat in a different humidity level. The dispute usually appears after packing, not during artwork approval.
Set Underbase and Mesh Count From the Garment, Not Only the Artwork
A dark blank usually needs a white underbase when the buyer wants bright print color. The underbase is the white ink layer printed before the visible color. If that base layer is uneven, the final print will usually look uneven too. This is why dark navy, black, bottle green, and charcoal blanks need more press-side testing than a white tee.
Mesh count is also easy to misread. A buyer may assume that higher mesh automatically means sharper detail. In practice, screen print accuracy depends on line width, ink viscosity, squeegee pressure, and off-contact distance as a group. A high mesh screen with the wrong ink flow can still clog or soften detail.

Protect Color Approval When the Blank Shade Changes
Screen print color is not judged in isolation. It sits on a fabric color. If the blank garment shade shifts from one dye lot to another, the same print ink can look warmer, flatter, or less bright. This matters for reorders, team uniforms, and retail drops where old and current stock may sit together.
The same logic applies to CMYK-style simulation printing. If fabric whiteness changes, the color balance can move even when the artwork file and ink mix stay the same. For white or light blanks used in detailed prints, buyers should ask whether the fabric lot has been checked before print approval.

Build a Screen Print QC Pack Before Bulk Production
A good screen print approval pack is short, but it prevents many late disputes. It should show the buyer what garment was tested, how the print was run, and what was approved. It should also make clear which variables are allowed to change and which need buyer approval.
- Blank garment record: style, color, fabric composition, GSM, dye lot, and size used for the strike-off.
- Moisture note: representative moisture check after cartons reach the print environment.
- Print setup note: mesh count, underbase decision, ink system, placement, and curing condition.
- Visual approval: buyer-approved strike-off under stable light, not a phone photo alone.
- Wash result: practical wash review and, where needed, AATCC 61-2A colorfastness evidence.
- Change rule: when fabric lot, blank color, or ink setup changes, the buyer sees a fresh strike-off.
